What is the internet of things?

The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to the thousands of physical IoT devices around the world that are now hooked up to the internet, all of which store and share data.

According to Wikipedia

The Internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances, and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these objects to connect and exchange data. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to inter-operate within the existing Internet infrastructure.

What is IoT(internet of things) in simple words?    
IoT(internet of things) is a concept and technic to control the electronic device from anywhere through the internet. Let’s understand it with an example.     

Take the example of your house. where you have lights, fens, and television.

Suppose that you are going out of the station. But you want the light of your garden and backyard
is on at night. Think How ……………………..?        


Here the internet of things(IoT) used, You can control your lights from anywhere in the world through the internet of things(IoT).

Let’s talk about how you can control the lights through the internet of things(IoT). We have these points of possibilities to control your lights/devices.  

1) Through the GSM 

Let’s suppose you have a GSM-based system that takes the command through GSM. Now, these days everyone has his own mobile.  You need to send an SMS to the GSM device which placed in your house. Once it receives the SMS and read it, and take the action according to that.   


For example, You send  SMS like  “light_1: ON  “.

This SMS received by your house’s GSM device, and send an ON command to the light_1. It will on.

If you send “light_1: OFF  “. It will Off. : )

2) Through the RF Module

In this kind of system, we use RF modules (Radio Frequency module).

“An RF module (radio frequency module) is a (usually) small electronic device used to transmit and/or receive radio signals between two devices. In an embedded system it is often desirable to communicate with another device wirelessly”.

In such a system, devices are connected with each other and they have a centralized device(Gateway) that is connected to the internet and takes command from there. And send the command to the device, which is received from the server.


For Example:- If we have to control all street lights through the internet then this concept is used.

  • We can access all lights and give them the command for On-Off, and dim.
  • Get information about device health and status.
  • Can collect the data like electronic current, voltage and calculate the power consumption.
  • Can create a schedule, for a device. like, when the device On, after how much time it goes dim, and when it will off.
